Camp Goodtimes is an independent, grassroots non-profit organization that provides a cost-free week of summer camp to pediatric oncology patients, survivors, and siblings affected by cancer. Campers ages 7-17 are welcomed from western Washington Alaska for two separate weeks of residential overnight summer camp – even a weeklong kayak trip is available for young adult survivors! Each year, Camp Goodtimes serves around 225 children and 15 young adults.
Artists from the Northgate Gene Juarez Salon & Spa has been involved with Camp Goodtimes for over a decade. On Carnival Day, the last day of camp, our group of artists donate their time and skill to offer crazy and wacky hairstyles for the staff and campers. Fun colored hairsprays, pipe cleaners, bobby pins, and other materials are used to create these outrageous looks. The group is the highlight of the carnival every year, with their departure always met by a massive whipped cream fight (where participants are then hosed off by the Vashon Fire Department).
Being involved with an organization like Camp Goodtimes is not only one of our favorite ways to give back to the community, but it also services as the ultimate team bonding experience. Artists are able to spend time together outside of the Salon & Spa, allowing them to interact with their coworkers and peers in a new and organic way creating stronger friendships and a more positive work environment.
