At Gene Juarez, we strive every day to be better for our clients, better for our employees, and better for our community. Because the communities that we have served for the past 45 years are at the heart of everything that we do, we are dedicated to assuming a leadership role towards the preservation of our environment.
In this vein, we are excited to announce the most significant “green” milestone in the history of the company, and the industry as a whole. On October 15, 2015, we launched our Sustainability Initiative, which will divert our annual service waste by 95%.
Through this important program, all byproducts of salon and spa services will be hand recycled and will ultimately end up benefiting the environment. Through this initiative, we will use hair clippings to create oil booms, smelt aluminum and other metals to produce clean energy, process hair color in centrifuges to separate water from chemicals, and ensure the safe disposal of batteries, blow-dryers, and light bulbs.
Unfortunately, sustainability has gained popularity more as a concept or a slogan than as a point of concrete action – there are no public works programs that exist that will allow for the safe and clean disposal of our service refuse. So, in order to do the right thing, to preserve the environment that we all share, we have had to seek a third party to hand recycle all of our service waste. The cost of this endeavor is extremely high, and we are incapable of absorbing it as a cost of business.
It is for this reason that we have added a small Environmental Stewardship Fee of $1 (for services under $35) or $2 (for services $35 and over) to each ticket at checkout.
The entire Gene Juarez family, at each of our locations, played an important part in the development of this initiative, and stands proudly behind this cause. Our philosophical decision that we cannot knowingly damage our environment carries with it risk. Risk that all will not feel, as we do, responsible to protect our beautiful Pacific Northwest home. But it is our hope that you feel proud about the good work that will be resulting from your service, and your hard earned dollars.
